Purple Top White Globe Turnip

Now that the spring Turnip crop has been harvested, we can direct sow again for the fall. They will need little care before they are ready to harvest. Create a line in the soil about a half-inch deep using a stick. Sow seeds about ½ apart. Cover with soil and water.

Rainbow Swiss Chard

Harvest Rainbow Swiss Chard. To harvest, cut the stems of up to half of a plant’s largest stalks about 2 inches above the soil level. Harvesting the outer leaves encourages the Chard to send up new shoots from the middle for more harvesting later. Be prepared to either eat the harvest or blanch and freeze them as they do not last long before wilting and losing texture quality.

Although their leaves won’t be as big, Rainbow Swiss Chard can be resown for a fall crop. Since this late crop won’t get as large, however, you can plant them closer together. Sow 30-40 seeds to be transplanted in about 4 weeks. Thin out the weaker seedlings by snipping the base of their stems so as not to disturb their roots. You should be left with one healthy seedling in each pot.

Pick Swiss Chard leaves when they are about 6 inches tall from the outside edge.

Scarlet Runner Bean teepee June 29
(no beans yet)
Scarlet Runner Beans

When the pods are about 8 inches long, they can be picked and the tender green beans can be cooked after cutting off their ends. If you miss beans, mature beans can still be eaten by popping out the beans from their pods and drying them on the windowsill, flipping them over after a few days to dry both sides.  After two weeks, store the beans in an airtight container in a cool place. To cook, soak beans for 12 hours in cool water and boil gently until tender.

You also might want to let the last crop of beans mature to be harvested when the teepee is taken down in the fall.

Or, you may want to plant a new crop for the fall.

July 29, 2023
Dwarf French Green Beans

Pick Dwarf French Green Beans by cutting their stems with scissors when they are about 3-4 inches long. Any larger and they could become tough. Snip their ends before cooking.
